What InstaPay is, its ₱50,000 limit, fees by bank and e-wallet, and what happens when a transfer fails.
Short answer InstaPay is the Philippines’ real-time transfer rail between banks and e-wallets. It runs 24/7, including weekends and holidays, and caps each transfer at ₱50,000. Since July 2026, sending is free for individual clients at most large banks, while GCash and the Maya wallet charge ₱10 per transfer.

What InstaPay is
The BSP describes InstaPay as “a real-time low-value EFT credit push payment scheme for transaction amounts up to P50,000”, launched on April 23, 2018 under the National Retail Payment System (BSP ↗). “Credit push” means the sender starts the transfer from their own bank or e-wallet app; the receiving account is credited almost at once. PPMI, the industry body that manages the scheme, says it is available “around the clock, including weekends and holidays” (PPMI ↗).
That makes InstaPay the rail behind most everyday transfers: GCash states that its bank transfers “are done in real-time through InstaPay” (GCash ↗). Larger amounts, and transfers that can wait for a banking day, go through PESONet, the batch rail.
InstaPay fees by bank and e-wallet
The fee is charged by the sending bank or e-wallet. The table shows the individual-client InstaPay fee from the BSP’s own summary of disclosed fees, sorted from free to the highest charge.

HSBC is marked in the same sheet as not offering InstaPay sending to individual clients. BDO’s own limits and fees page ↗ still lists ₱10 per InstaPay transfer, against free from July 9, 2026 in the BSP sheet. PESONet fees and corporate fees for every institution are on transfer fees by bank.
What changed
- Beforea BSP moratorium in place since December 2021 barred increases in InstaPay and PESONet fees (BSP ↗).
- Nowmost large banks charge individuals nothing, and GCash and Maya charge ₱10.
- EffectiveJuly 1 to August 15, 2026 depending on the institution, after BSP Circular No. 1238 set July 4, 2026 as the compliance date (news).
The ₱50,000 limit and bank daily limits
₱50,000 per transaction is the scheme’s own ceiling, so it is the same at every bank and e-wallet. UnionBank puts it plainly: “InstaPay only allows transfers of up to Php 50,000.00 per transaction” (UnionBank ↗). Daily limits are set by each institution.
| Bank | Per transfer | Daily limit or count, as published | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BDO | ₱50,000 | ₱50,000 | Minimum ₱100; part of a ₱100,000 limit shared with Scan to Pay and QR withdrawals; the limit includes the fee |
| Metrobank | ₱50,000 | ₱100,000 | Metrobank app |
| UnionBank | ₱50,000 | ₱100,000 to e-wallets | Rolling 24-hour limit across GCash, Maya, Coins.ph and GrabPay; you can also set your own lower limit |
| BPI | ₱50,000 | No limit on the number of transfers | Real-time credit, 24 x 7 |
For more than ₱50,000 in one go, use PESONet, which has no scheme cap; your bank sets that limit instead (see PESONet cut-off times and caps).
Tip Splitting a large amount into several InstaPay transfers works only up to your bank’s daily limit, and each transfer is charged separately where the sender pays a fee.
InstaPay QR, QR Ph, Bills Pay and Cash-in
PPMI separates the services that run on InstaPay (PPMI ↗):
- InstaPay QR is for person-to-person transfers, such as sending to family or splitting a bill. Your bank or e-wallet may charge its usual InstaPay fee.
- QR Ph P2M is for paying merchants. PPMI states that consumers pay no fee, and that over 2 million merchants accept it.
- Bills Pay PH pays billers through InstaPay, and PPMI states it is free for customers, with over 1,700 billers.
- InstaPay Cash-in loads money into your own account at another bank or e-wallet, as opposed to a transfer to another person.
How long it takes
- Transfer submittedreal timeInstaPay credits the receiving account in real time, on any day and at any hour (BPI ↗, PPMI ↗).
- Transfer delayed by a system issue or maintenanceup to 3 to 5 business daysGCash says it sends an SMS saying the money will either be credited to the bank account in 3 to 5 business days or returned to GCash in 1 to 2 business days (GCash ↗).
- Transfer failedrefund to the senderGCash returns the full amount plus the fee to the wallet; after 2 business days without a refund, GCash says to report it in the app under Get Help (GCash ↗).
Whether the fee comes back depends on the sender’s institution. BDO keeps the fee on rejected transfers when the error was the sender’s or the receiving account is dormant, closed or restricted, and charges only one fee when a transfer is debited more than once (BDO ↗).
Scheduled downtime
InstaPay runs 24/7, but individual banks and e-wallets take their own InstaPay service offline for maintenance, often overnight, and announce it in advisories. Recent examples: RCBC and DBP on September 23 to 24 and GCash during BancNet maintenance on September 28 to 29, 2026.
Warning InstaPay money arrives in real time, so check the account name and number before you confirm. Report a failed or wrong transfer only through your bank’s or e-wallet’s own app or hotline, never through a link, page or number sent to you after a transfer goes wrong.
