Upwork to GCash in the Philippines works through Direct to Wallet or a GCash Virtual US Account.
Short answer Upwork lists GCash, PayMaya and GrabPay as Direct to Wallet options for the Philippines; most withdrawals arrive within minutes, and Upwork’s fee varies by wallet. The second route sends dollars by ACH to your GCash Virtual US Account: GCash charges no ACH receiving fee and quotes 1 to 3 business days, while Upwork charges US$2.99 per Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawal for freelancers with an international tax address. Either way, the name must match your verified Upwork name, and a new method becomes active after three days.

The two routes side by side
| Direct to Wallet (GCash) | Direct to U.S. Bank into GCash Virtual US Account | |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | Upwork’s fee varies by wallet and is shown by Upwork | Upwork: US$2.99 per withdrawal for an international tax address; GCash: no fee on ACH |
| Currency that arrives | Pesos, at an exchange rate that includes conversion costs | US dollars, held until you convert |
| Timing | Most within minutes | ACH: 1 to 3 business days |
| Limit | Varies by wallet; shown when you add the method or withdraw | Receiving: no limit; converting to PHP follows your GCash limits |
| New method active after | Three days | Three calendar days |
On Direct to Wallet, Upwork says no separate conversion fee is deducted, because the conversion cost is inside the exchange rate; your wallet provider may charge its own fees. On the Virtual US Account route, you choose when to convert: GCash sets the rate at the moment you withdraw USD to PHP, or converts automatically if your conversion mode is set to automatic.
Route 1: Direct to Wallet
Upwork says Direct to Wallet availability depends on your profile country, and you see your options when you add a withdrawal method. Register and activate your GCash account first.
Direct to Wallet steps
- In Upwork, go to Account settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile app) › Withdrawals.
- Select Add a method.
- Choose the Set up button for Direct to Wallet.
- Enter your wallet details and select Add Direct to Wallet account.
- Wait three days for the method to become active, then go to Manage finances › Withdraw earnings › Withdraw now.

Your first and last name must exactly match the name on the wallet and your verified name on Upwork. If a withdrawal has not arrived after 24 hours, Upwork asks you to check for any concern on the wallet provider’s side first, then contact Upwork.
Route 2: Direct to U.S. Bank into a GCash Virtual US Account
The GCash Virtual US Account is a virtual account powered by Meridian that receives US dollars. GCash says it is issued by Meridian Payments US under a “for benefit of” arrangement, is not a bank account and is not covered by deposit insurance. It is closed-loop: it pays out only to your own linked GCash account, and withdrawing USD to an outside US bank account is not supported.

When a withdrawal goes wrong
Upwork says a withdrawal cannot be cancelled or reversed once started. Money sent to an invalid or closed account usually returns to your Upwork balance within four to eight business days. If your conversion to pesos stops because you reached your GCash limit, GCash says you can withdraw the rest at the start of the next month; see GCash limits.
Warning Set up the method yourself inside your own Upwork and GCash accounts. Never give your Upwork password, GCash MPIN or a one-time code to anyone who offers to “release” or speed up a payout.
