GCash vs GoTyme vs MariBank is first a wallet-versus-bank comparison, not a simple ranking of three apps.
Short answer GCash Wallet is BSP-regulated e-money, not a bank deposit. GoTyme Bank and MariBank offer bank deposit accounts whose eligible deposits are covered by PDIC up to ₱1 million per depositor. GoTyme separates its everyday deposit balance from interest-bearing GoalSave, while MariBank’s mobile savings account earns interest credited daily. Rates, fees and promotions can change, so compare the product terms shown in each app before moving money.

The table compares the legal form of the balance and the core product. It does not compare temporary promotions or declare one app better.
The biggest difference is what your balance legally is
GCash calls its wallet a reloadable e-money instrument. The BSP’s electronic-money rules say e-money is held in a non-interest-bearing, non-deposit transaction account and “is not considered a deposit”. The BSP list of supervised electronic money issuers places G-Xchange, Inc. in the non-bank EMI section.
That means the peso balance in the GCash Wallet is not a bank deposit and is not covered by PDIC. GCash can still receive money, pay bills, send transfers and fund purchases because those are wallet functions. The legal distinction is explained in detail on Is GCash a bank?.
GoTyme Bank’s terms describe two deposit accounts. Its regular Deposit Account is a non-interest-bearing savings account linked to spending channels and its virtual and physical debit cards. GoalSave is a separate interest-bearing savings account inside the app.
MariBank’s terms define a Deposit Account opened with the bank through its application. Its official savings page says the account earns interest credited daily and has no maintaining balance. MariBank also states that it is regulated by the BSP and that eligible deposits are insured by PDIC up to ₱1 million per depositor.
Deposit insurance: what the ₱1 million limit means
PDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits in member banks, up to the maximum deposit insurance coverage for each depositor at each bank. It does not turn every product shown inside a finance app into an insured deposit.
For this comparison:
- GCash Wallet: e-money, so the wallet balance is not a deposit and does not carry PDIC deposit insurance.
- GoTyme Bank: the bank’s terms state that its accounts are subject to PDIC rules and the ₱1 million maximum per depositor.
- MariBank: the bank’s terms state that deposit accounts are subject to PDIC rules and insured up to ₱1 million per depositor.

Products offered by partners inside GCash need a separate check. A savings account opened with a partner bank follows that bank’s terms; it is not the same balance as the GCash Wallet.
Interest: compare the exact account, not the app name
The GCash Wallet does not earn interest under BSP e-money rules and GCash’s own terms. If the app displays a savings or investment product, read the named provider’s terms and do not assume the wallet itself has become an interest-bearing account.
GoTyme’s ordinary Deposit Account is non-interest-bearing. Its GoalSave Account earns interest based on the daily ending balance, with accrued interest credited according to the bank’s current terms. Moving money between the spending balance and GoalSave changes which product holds the money.
MariBank’s official savings page says interest is credited daily. The advertised rate and any tiering can change, so this page does not freeze a rate. For a current rate comparison, use digital bank savings interest rates and confirm the figure in the bank’s app before depositing.
Cards, cash and transfers
GCash is built around wallet payments and transfers. Its wallet limits depend on the user’s profile, and separate limits can apply to individual services. Check GCash limits and GCash fees for the current wallet rules.
GoTyme’s account terms include a virtual Visa debit card, a physical Visa debit card, ATM use, transfers, withdrawals and transactions through authorised bank partners. The same terms say GoTyme is a digital bank without physical branches, so access runs through its app, kiosks and partner channels.
MariBank is app-based and offers savings, payments and transfers. Its official help centre and product pages should be the final check for a transfer fee, card feature or cash-in channel because those operating details can change before the legal status of the account does.
If your comparison is mainly about sending money between institutions, use the route pages under transfer fees. A bank or wallet may charge differently depending on whether the transfer goes through InstaPay, PESONet, a card or a cash-in partner.
Which one fits a specific job?
Start with the job instead of choosing from a headline rate.
For everyday wallet payments
GCash is a wallet. It is designed for cash in, merchant payments, bills and transfers, with profile-based wallet and transaction limits. The trade-off is that the wallet balance is e-money rather than a PDIC-insured deposit and does not earn interest.
For spending plus separated savings
GoTyme combines a regular spending balance, debit cards and an interest-bearing GoalSave account under one bank. Read the app’s current pricing advisory for the GoalSave rate and any card or transfer charges.
For a mobile savings balance
MariBank’s core product is a deposit account whose official page describes daily interest crediting and no maintaining balance. Confirm the current rate, transfer allowance and card availability in the app.
None of those descriptions is a verdict. A person may use a wallet for payments and a bank account for savings, provided they track fees, limits and the provider holding each balance.
