China Bank maintaining balance, initial deposit and below-balance fee for each savings, checking and OFW account.

Short answer China Bank’s maintaining balance is ₱2,000 for CBC ATM Savings, ₱5,000 for CBC Passbook Savings and ₱5,000 for CBC Check Plus, measured as a monthly average daily balance (ADB). Fall below it for at least two consecutive months and China Bank charges ₱300 a month on a peso savings or checking account. CBC OKS Peso Savings, the account for OFWs and their beneficiaries, has its initial deposit and maintaining balance waived.

China Bank maintaining balance by account

Maintaining balance in the Philippines means the average daily balance a bank asks you to keep each month. China Bank calls it the “Minimum Monthly Average Daily Balance Requirement” and computes it as the sum of each day’s ending balance divided by the number of days in the month (China Bank ↗). Pick the account to see what it requires.

It comes with a debit card. This is one of the two accounts China Bank lets new customers open online in its My CBC app, and the bank’s own FAQ for that route says ATM Savings “require immediate funding” and that you should keep “an Average Daily Balance (ADB) of at least P2,000 per month to avoid charges” (China Bank ↗).

The fee for falling below the maintaining balance

China Bank’s fee schedule, effective January 2025, sets one monthly fee per account currency. It applies only after the balance stays below the minimum monthly ADB “for at least 2 consecutive months” (China Bank ↗).

Account Monthly fee below the ADB
Peso savings ₱300
Peso checking ₱300
US dollar savings US$5
Euro savings €5
Chinese yuan savings CNY 30
Japanese yen savings JPY 500

Closing a savings account within 90 days of opening costs the same amounts: ₱300 for peso savings, US$5, €5, CNY 30 or JPY 500 (China Bank ↗).

China Bank’s general terms set out how the fee runs. It “shall be charged if the account balance falls below the minimum monthly ADB for at least two (2) consecutive months for both active and dormant accounts” and “shall be collected every month until the account meets the required minimum monthly ADB” (China Bank ↗). The same terms let the bank close a peso or foreign currency savings account whose balance “becomes zero (0) or negative”, including because of service charges.

Tip One month below the minimum does not trigger the fee. If a month’s ADB dips, bring the balance back up so the next month’s average clears the requirement, and the two-month count does not complete.

When China Bank calls an account dormant

China Bank’s general terms set three clocks. A checking account with no deposit or withdrawal for one year is dormant, and a peso or foreign currency savings account for two years. Peso accounts inactive for ten years or more are escheated, that is, turned over to the Treasurer of the Philippines (China Bank ↗). Dormancy does not stop the below-ADB fee: the terms apply it to “both active and dormant accounts”.

Under BSP rules, a bank cannot charge a dormancy fee before the fifth year after the last activity, and the fee cannot exceed ₱30 a month (BSP ↗).

Opening an account with no maintaining balance

Among China Bank’s own accounts, CBC OKS Peso Savings has both the initial deposit and the maintaining balance waived, and CBC OKS USD Savings needs US$10 to open and has no ADB requirement (China Bank ↗). Both are for OFWs and their beneficiaries. China Bank Savings, a separate thrift bank in the China Bank group, sells its own Basic Deposit Account; it is listed with other no-minimum accounts on maintaining balance by bank.

To open CBC ATM Savings or OKS Peso Savings online, China Bank asks that you be a Filipino citizen aged 18 or over with no existing China Bank account, a permanent Philippine address, an active mobile number and email, and a Philippine-issued ID. The bank reviews the application for two days (China Bank ↗).

If a charge on your statement does not match these amounts, China Bank’s customer service hotline is +632 888-55-888, and its pages also list the BSP’s consumer channels: BSP Online Buddy at bsp.gov.ph, SMS 021582277 and the BSP Facebook page (China Bank ↗).
